Auto-sexing cross

Can someone explain how this works, in laymans terms please? I am making an attempt to learn the genetics and color jargon that I hear so much. Any advice on resources would be great too.

Hi Paul,

There is an explanation of auto-sexing or sex-linkage in this article: National Federation-Simple genetics

The simplest one I know is red hen and blue cоck all offspring will be blue hens and red cocks.
Here are a few links in my favorites. I don[t know how to make them hot buttons, but they can be cut and pasted easily into your browsers search box.

The first one to learn would be a pairing of a Blue cоck x an Ash Red hen. They will produce all Ash Red cocks and all Blue hens. It don't work the same with these two colors when they are paired as an Ash red cоck x a Blue hen. With that pairing you get all Ash Reds in both sexes.

Blue and Ash Red of course are their base colors. You must be able to understand what the base colors are in order to understand sex-linking in this case.

Another sex linked pairing of base colors is a Brown cоck x an Ash Red hen. Here you get all Ash Red cocks and all Brown hens.

Also, Brown cоck x Blue hen = all Blue cocks and all Brown hens.

Then there's more obscure pairings that ID the sexes of only certain offspring in a pairing, i.e. in a pairing of an Ash Red cоck carrying Blue x an Ash Red hen, all of the Blues this pair produces will be hens. But that will only be 1/4 of the total offspring but the you will know in the nest the Blues are hens.

Then there is Dilute.

Dilute cоck x Non Dilute hen = all Non Dilute cocks and all Dilute hens

And Qualmond.

Non Qualmond cоck x Qualmond hen = all Qualmond cocks and all non Qualmond hens.

I have a website I am working on that has a Table that shows the results of many pairings. Keep in mind, this is far from complete and has yet to be proof read. I have not released this to the public for those reasons. But if it will help, it's located here:

Good!

I have found that there are mainly two types of students of genetics. They are those who know a lot and those who know little or nothing. The ones who know little or nothing have given up a long time ago because it seems too complicated. Just take it slow and easy and don't give up and you can learn. There's nothing wrong with admiting you don't know. One of the wonders of Pigeon genetics is that no one knows it all. Even the most advanced genetics guru has a lot yet to learn.

You can never figure it out. That's why so many give up, but that's why it's so fascinating. Just take it one little step at a time.
