Barless Blue Radar Project
Leon has his White Radar project. My Radar project, other than to breed hawk evaders, is to make some barless Radars. I'll add the same gene to the HTPs while I am at it. A nice pair of barless Homers from Alan is where I'll "steal" the gene.

Re: Barless Blue Radar Project
Nice picture... I really like barless
I am going to put it in HTP's too. It's one of those floating recessive genes that would be an asset to the breed.

Beautiful looking birds. Looking forward to comparing our progress. What are you crossing them with?

Re: Barless Blue Radar Project
I'm crossing the RH hen to a Horseman Thief pouter cоck to add barless to my HTP gene pool. Might add some Pica blood as well as a second cross to fly them out as Radars. Adding a recessive gene takes more time than adding, say, the almond gene. So I am in a hurry. LOL.
I'm with Alan in asking the "why would you cross homers with either Moroncelos or Morrilleros" question? I only recently added them to my loft and don't know if I'd mess that beautiful gene pool up too quickly. Alan's cross of Moroncelo X Morrillero seems justified because type is similar, and I believe the Morrilleros are in the Moroncelos pedigree as it is. Also because the gene pool here in the US is limited. I'd even cross a Pica to them, but . . . homers? Hmmmm, if you do make that cross they'd probably be beautiful.

Re: Barless Blue Radar Project
I also agree Shannon. I can't see any point in crossing the Moroncelo with a homer. The Moroncelo has been bred for years to be the ultimate thief pouter for hunting zuritas. Why mess with perfection.
As far as crossing Pica into any thief pouter project you would have to be very careful as the Pica has no sense of self preservation and therefore lends itself to being easily captured.

Re: Barless Blue Radar Project
Yes, Gary has a good point about adding Picas to a project as THAT is an entirely different TP game. I had to stop and think how they are flown. And how easy it is for them to be picked up by humans, any humans, when chasing a hen. That tractability could be a detriment IF you want your TPs to evade predators of ANY type. But if you simply want to add some fire to a cross, and then remember that they might only work well up close and around the home loft, try some. They MIGHT not be a wise second cross for my Radars. Maybe Laudinos would. Or a cross back to HTPs. Ah, decisions, decisions just ahead.
I did note that a Black HTP was in a nest with a Red Check Racing Homer young hen this afternoon. Two Radar producing pairs mated up and ready to breed.

Re: Barless Blue Radar Project
Great looking Homer Shannon, should make for some great looking birds.
My Cuban Pouters have done very well against a Cooper that roams our area.
I did lose one about 2 weeks ago after about a month of not flying. The 5 I have now are out quite a bit and no losses.
I have some Cubans I got last fall from Will Brown that are supposed to be part Laudino. They are on eggs now but our weather is going to get nasty for awhile.4-6 inches of snow and 15-30 mph winds, yay

Re: Barless Blue Radar Project
Shannon if I had access to Laudinos and was going to make Radars again I would use the Laudino for the first cross and then Gaditano for the second just as laid out by Anthony in his formula. Also do the reverse cross as he specifies to get the working hens.
If I was going to swap out anything I would replace the Gaditano with a Moroncelo. I have used Marchenero in some of my crosses but worry that the lobster tail will return in future crosses if I'm not careful as it is a partially recessive gene.
