Moroncelo crosses

Although I used to breed Valencianos from Mexico (even though one national pouter specialist told me they didn't exisit--they DID in my loft), Laudinos, some Horseman, and Jiennenses, I am quite taken by the Moroncelos. I've ordered a pair from Alan along with a pair of Moroncello X Morrillero crosses.

What's the rationale behind that cross Alan? To add some vigor and increase the gene pool heterozygosity? To add some "color" to the Moroncelo gene pool? To add some of that Morriellero "fire" to the same gene pool?

I'm going to put the pure Moroncellos together next year to add a few to my Suelta, then put one of the crosses back to a straight Moroncello to give me some 3/4 out crosses. I'll fly them all and only keep the "workers" of the lot.

It's good to have thief pouters in those empty pens again.

I bred a total of 6 of them and sold 4 to Manny Garcia in FL. He is a hard core flyer who lives right in the middle of the working Pouter circuit. He said if he puts a hen out, within 30 minutes he has all kinds of Pouter cоcks from other flyers working her.

Anyway, Manny said the crosses are the best thief pouters he has ever worked.

You will love the Moroncelos, I know I do! They have become one of my favorites. emoticon

These birds will fly for hours and have more drive than even Picas. They have great personalities and are beautiful birds.

Manny said the pures are so hot that if you are using them to work, they sometimes lack conservation. That's why they work so well in crosses. They are hotter than any other breed but are not aggressive towards the hens like Picas.

They also make good crosses with Horseman. A bird that is 3/4 Horseman and 1/4 Moroncelo makes a fantastic working Horseman.

Re: Moroncelo crosses

Thanks for the info Alan. I knew there was a good reason for you to make the cross; now I know why. The birds are in individual pens inside a loft. The Moroncelo pair was let loose in the loft late in the afternoon--hen first while the young Morrillero Red Pied (he's a cоck) was let loose with her. The Moroncelo wanted none of that. Called and spun and called some more. Let him loose with the other two and the show began.

Yes, the Moroncelos are not as "on top of the hen" persistent as Picas. The cоck didn't even light into the young Morrillero cоck like some of my Valencianos from Mexico would have. He just took control of his hen and enticed her back up to the top nest. The young Morriellero didn't leave his nest box; he did keep an eye on the hen in the top nest box, however.

None of the Moroncelos or crosses were mated, so they should be anxious. The Morrie was mated.

I love the color of the bronze crosses. Strange because neither parent was bronze.

Good luck with your imports Gary. Do you know Douglas McClary? Doug is an old friend from England, now living in Australia. He's a Show Racer man, but has a few Dragoons, if my feeble memory serves me. Wonderful man; outstanding pigeon judge. And, of course, he jumped right into the thick of working for the hobby at the national level. He writes pretty well for a British boy, too.

Yes Alan, that's what I really liked about your crosses when I saw them online. Seems Moroncelos have lots of bronze hiding under that spread, and it became more evident in the crosses. Or is it T-check with other modifiers? They also have a heavy dose of under grizzle, as do the Morriellos. That gene makes for interesting flight and primary feather colors.

I haven't met Doug yet Shannon but I do know of him. You are right about him being heavily involved in the fancy in Australia now. I don't show anymore so don't get to catch up with the showmen.
