House keeping

So, have you found that the location of your hen boxes effects the preformance of the males? Can they tell a hen from voice alone? I know they should not be able to see the hens but do you need to keep them out of hearing range as well?

Re: House keeping

Are you thinking about getting some Picas?

When I used to fly them I didn't have to worry about competition training because there's no one around here to compete against. So, I used to just keep my cоcks in a bachelor loft and throw a blue hen out to fly and then let the cоcks out after her. It was like a Beagle chasing a rabbit but in the air, on the T-poles and wires, roof -tops etc. Even though it was just me, it was a fun backyard sport. I used to let them out for my pigeon friends and they were impressed.

i find myself in the same situation alan. The next step seems like a leap! if only i got some people who likes them the same way...then we can do something. More and more people are asking ?'s and wanting birds. Locally, i hope to get something started before it cools down. Lol.

Re: House keeping

Well Alan, I have taken the past several months that it has just been myself working and have reviewed my finances. I have come up with a maximum number of breeders to begin each season with so as not to raise more than I can feed. Each fall I will sell the excess. I think that instead of keeping 6 pair of catalonians I will keep fewer pairs of cats and a few pouters for flying. I very much miss having pouters in the air. I am pretty sure that picas will be my pouter of choice, although horseman havent been eliminated. I want a purebred thief pouter that will fly and breed without much outside help(opposite of the laudino). So I am researching as much as I can so I can make the best choice.
