Re: Rafeño Pouters

I just recieved my 2 pair of Rafeno pouters from Manny Garcia today. They are very good birds. They remind me of my old stock from Frank Soto. The white cоck had the blockiest head I have seen in a long time. The little black white flight looked exactly like a Champion I had years ago. Who says there are no good Rafeno in the states? Thanks Manny!

Alan - You are correct sir, I sent some Cat's down to Florida and a few extra Jiennense. I got some nice Rafeno and a "pet" thief pouter. I will be training him for table show competition!
Gary - When my niece gets some time I will try and have her post some pics of all of my birds on the Spanish pouter topic site.

Re: Rafeño Pouters

Rafeno History Anyone?
I was asked to describe the origin of the Rafeno, here goes. The Rafeno was originaly from Africa, brought to Europe by the Arabs during the Spanish conquest. It was describes as early as the 14th century. Much more information on the breed occured in the 17th and 18th centuries. Although there were no "written standards" long ago, this breed had an oral standard. That standard has lasted to this day - over 1000 years unchanged The breed in early days was almost exclusively developed in Seville. There it was much loved for its powerful ways of seduction. It was said to be the hottest of all the Spanish pouters in olden times. The first Rafenos came to America in the 50's. They have been imported several times times since. They seemed to have had their heyday in the 80's and 90's when several importations were made by FLA. and CA. breeders. Good numbers were being bred and shown throughout the country at that time. Also contributing to their popularity (and the popularity of all the Spanish pouters breeds) was the fact that Frank Barrachinna was writing many fine articles for the now defunct Pigeon Fancier Magazine. Why is it not as popular today? Who knows for sure, but the Rafeno is a fine little breed that deserves attention by the discriminating Spanish Pouter fancier. But be prepared, they do require additonal care. You MUST HAVE feeders for this breed. Also extra care must be taken to keep the nostrils clear and their beaks trimmed! It is also a good idea to use a fine emery board to file the wattles to keep them looking clean (all wattled breeds).

They are lovely pouters Rafeños, I really enjoyed Frank Barrachina's articles Mike, they were good and informative. This is a Rafeño in a Scottish Dookit, and a pastel portrait of mine:

Has anyone got copies of Franks articles on Spanish Pouters. I have copies of his Profile On Pouters articles on Marcheneros and Valenciana's but would like to read the rest.
