Enrique -
What is that breed? I like the chin wattles. They must have Laudino in them.

Re: The father of the modern Pica

Supposedly the modern pica is a descendent of the ancient Valenciano and the pigeons pictured are kind of the middle link between the two. Those are the pigeons that were taken to places like Cuba and Argentina in the 40's and 50's because they were not good at the suelta, they carried alot of Valenciano blood and were better thiefs than picas, so the Deportivo breeders did not want them. They would not chase a hen (la pluma) blindly and beat her along with the other males, they would get away from the other pigeons and try to get the hen to follow them home, the opposite of the deportivos which are supposed to follow the hen no matter what.

So would they be the Cubanito's? I have heard of them but have never seen them.
In the 90's a friend brought from Argentina a large pouter breed called Argentinos. They were the tallest Spanish Pouter I have ever seen. They had a short beak like a Rafeno and a smallish globe. They were not very pretty and never caught on. The last ones I seen were sent to Tony Novoa in FLA., after that they disappeared.

Juan Betancourt from Los Angeles has what he says is the Argentinean thief pouter. Says they are real big. Don't know, I didn't see them

What you guys are talking about is the Buchon de Pico Corto.

I don't like them and I seriously daud they would make a good thief pouter.

Re: The father of the modern Pica

I have a cousin who came from Argentina in 1999. He used to raise some pigeons that he described like the picture you have here. He says the pigeons had tusk? under his beak. I thought he was talking about elephant tusks.Honestly, I thought he was crazy. He has been on the search for this breed. He says they were great thieves. He told me a story about them capturing majority of the feral pigeons from a nearby church. He likes the laudinos and granadinos now since he says those are the closest in resemblance to what he used to have. I am trying to get him into picas. emoticon He wants the huge nose. emoticon

Darren if you mix a pica and a Laudino it would problaby look like the ones on the pictures or at least fairly close, he may like something like that.

Yeah, he did figure that out. He bought a couple of pairs of pigeons and from both pairs, the cocks were laudinos and the hens were picas. The young are very similar to that, but no tusks. He likes them, anyways. I keep asking him, what are you planning to do with them now? He doesn't fly them to steal pigeons. There isn't a bunch of people around here to capture their birds.
Can you tell, I am really trying to bring him to the picas?
