Different types of "Horseman"

How many different types of pigeons are called Horseman Thief Pouters?

I was speaking on the phone last night with a friend from Miami and he said he had never seen a Horseman Thief Pouter in person till the other day when he bought one in a Miami pet shop.

Well, he sent me some pictures of it and it looks to me like a Pica cross of some kind. It definitely looks like it has a lot of Spanish influence in it. Do the flyers in Miami have Spanish Pouter cross they call "Horseman Thief Pouters"?

I'll put up his pictures when I get some time.

honest alan, your making too much of this, there is no controversy here, it is just a singular case of a spanish cross bird in a pet shop being misslabeled as a horseman, possible due to some of will brown birds making there way to miami under the missnamed tag of horsemen, then possibly crossed into spanish birds but passed on once again as horsemen. i like the bird never the less. vic

I am wondering if it's possible Levi could be to blame for some of this? emoticon

Hi Alan,
Its difficult to say exactly what the story is behind the petshop pigeon but most likely, he is a result of lack of knowledge.

The name Horseman Pouter is unknown to 99% of the pouters breeders in Miami. Remember that our tradition was passed down from the Spaniards not the rest of Europe and Cuba is an isolated Island where alot of lack of information exist due to the way the regime runs the country. In addition, the mayority of pouter breeders are people who grew up on the streets of Cuba playing ball and on the roof tops with their pigeons and are more interested in the experience than in the educational aspect of pigeons. So when you put these two together, lack of information and pigeon related material, and a very active outdoor life style, is easy to understand why we grow up in Cuba with little knowledge of things like this. Perfect example, I have meet on several occations, people in petshops who at the sight of a Rafeño say: "Oh look, an Africanito" (Africanito is what the African Owl is called in Cuba) What more can I say?So who ever took that pigeon to the petshop and sold it to the owner, could have called it what ever he pleased and the petshop owner would have "bought it"

If you mean by Levi, the book "The Pigeon" once again 99% of the pouters breeders here don't know about that book and the mayority don't speak English well enough to read it.

Because it violated the Terms of Service. Enrique's post was already edited, there was no reason for you to insult him.

Guys it is not my intention to insult anyone, if anyone felt offended, please accept my apology. Like I said, I am Cuban my self, but the reality can not be changed. Many of these people that I speak of are good friends of mine and I have nothing but the outmost respect for them and many others I simply know.

However, if anyone goes to Cuba and asks on the streets to any pigeon breeder if they know what a horseman pouter is they will tell you they don't, same goes for the Levi book, they have not heard of it. And the same case happens here in Miami with 99% of breeders, many of which don't even speak English, so how can they read Levi's book. I am amazed at how little knowledge of breeds and genetics most breeders here have, its just a fact, its not an insult.

Again, if I offended anyone, I apologize.

I would like to add also, that as is logically so, the breeders in Spain are way ahead of everyone else when it comes to breeding pouters, those guys are light years ahead and true artists as can be seen with the changes that breeds such as the Jiennenses have gone through in the past 20 years, its just amazing.

In my last visit to Spain I visited several breeders and everytime I learned something new; my hat off to them just as I highly respect the effort and success that breeders in Cuba have at breeding thief pouters with so few and limited resources.
