Re: Back to the drawing board.

Man! I must say that I have dealt with breeders of many breeds but they can not compare with the Spanish pouter breeders. Maybe that is why I have given away several birds as well haha. If your offering than I would be dumb not to accept. Just let me know when you are ready. Thanks.

Alan if Matt is not interested, put me on the list, I could use him.

Enrique, I may have to keep this bird. He is part of my project. I was going to replace him with the bird I got from Matt, but it's looking more and more like matt's bird is going to die emoticon It started with him over drinking, then he got so heavy he stepped on his crop and injured it. It has a big sore on it. After I flushed him out, I have been giving him a tablespoon of water at a time so he won't gorge himself but that water is not digesting. It stays in his crop and he is slowing starving to death. I think the sore infected his digestive tube and the water can't digest.

Anyway... I have another one you can have. He's the son of the bird you wanted in the picture. He's the same Indigo color but he is 3/4 Laudino and 1/4 Racer, instead of 1/2 and 1/2. He looks like a Laudino with a small crop, and probably can fly real well.

Not a problem that sound good.

Too bad I am so far away, the crop problem can be easily fixed and is a shame to see a pigeon die becuase of it.

One solution.. make a bib and put it on him for about a week. Start with a small square of frabic. Make a whole off the center where you will insert the head of the pigeon. Attach four long braces or thick string or something of that sort on each cortner of the square, that you will use to tie behind the pigeons back.

Now take the pigeon insert the head through the whole. Keeping the bottom part of the square over his crop. Take the bottom two braces and pass them under the pigeon's wings and bring them across over his back. Then take the top two braces and and tie them to thw bottom two.

Its alot more simple than it reads and is a quick fix. If you make the bib the right way, you can use it as many times as needed.

Another solution is to cut off the excess crop, this is more detailed. If I find a video of it I will post it.

I know how to cut off a section of the crop. I have done it with my Gaditanos many times and have had 100% success. I am going to do that today. But it may not help if his digestive tube going from the crop to the stomach is infected from the large wound. That's what I think is the problem because when his crop is empty and he drinks only a tablespoon of water, he can't digest even that!

His crop is too soft. After you make the operation being carefull not to work with the inside crop, only the outside, give him some antibiotics for the infection.

Good luck and if there is anything I can do from here, don't hesitate to let me know.

Yes, only the outside of the crop.

Well, I did it. It looks good. The wound was big and infected. I hope it works.

Re: Back to the drawing board.

I once had a bird who got crop bound so bad he developed an abscess the size of a silver dollar. I docked his crop but the abscess remained. It grew the size of a golf ball and was a nasty yellow color and hard. He was healthy and eating fine so I left it. One day I looked in on him and it had fallen off and he had a huge hole in his crop the size of a silver dollar emoticon He was staying right next to the water fountain because every drink he took it would just spill out through that hole emoticon

I put like 5 stitches in him with dissolvable Homer thread and he healed fine and was a healthy bird afterwards.

This is how I dock their crops

Image

I wet the feathers and pull them from the area of the crop to be docked. I pull a piece of about 1" of skin at the lower or middle part of the crop and rap a rubber band around the skin I want removed. The blood circulation will stop and the skin will fall off over a period of time. It is supposed to be painless for the bird and he won't have anymore problems. They eat and drink as they please without a problem. This only removes a portion of the front of the crop. It does not effect the digestive tubes. The crop size is reduced but it still keeps it's basic shape.

Dental floss also works great instead of the rubber band.
