This years Moult

Has anyone else had a later than normal moult in their birds. Usually at this time of year my birds have finished and are ready for the show season. The only thing I can think of is the unusually hot summer. Any Ideas?

Hi Joe,

It could be. Maybe it depends on the weather in your area. I'm not sure how that works.

I've found the moult to be quite haphazard this year, and generally later. A couple of birds seemed to start, then stayed put for a while, then moved a little bit further on. I'm still looking at birds growing neck feathers.

The moult here in the South as I have talked to several of my friends has been much later and more severe than usual. I had a lot of birds looking like sticks with baloons attached to them. And with my luck my best birds are still a few weeks away from finishing and Louisville is a week from today. Better luck next year lol.

Alan, I am still bringing a show team. I just think another week or so would finish out the birds. I will keep my fingers crossed.

Alan, I am showing 3 Gaditano's and 1 is yours. A White Qualmond out of Blanco and the Blue Bar Hen. He is a beast and looks to be ready for the show. emoticon

Re: This years Moult

Blanco has been producing some awesome birds this year. I found out he is homozygous Qualmond Grizzle. I had been using him in my orange eyed white project but now I know he's a pure Qualomond it was all a waste of time because all he will produce are Qualmonds, and Qualmond Grizzles will never be pure white, Qualmond will always molt in a dark feather or two. So, I have switched my white project to recessive white. You never have to worry about colored feathers popping up with recessive white.
